What Is PPC (Pay Per Click?)

PPC is a model of digital advertising where advertisers pay a fee each time one of their ads is clicked. Essentially, it's a way of buying visits to your site, rather than attempting to earn those visits organically through SEO. The upside of this, is that if you have the budget, it can yield quick results and turn into a predictable 'Money Printing Machine'.

One of the most popular forms of PPC is search engine advertising, where advertisers bid for ad placement in a search engine's sponsored links when someone searches for a keyword related to their business offering. For example, if we bid on the keyword "best ppc marketing agencies," our ad would show up at the top of the Google search result page, regardless of whether our website was organically ranking for that phrase.

Every time our ad is clicked, sending a visitor to our website, we have to pay the search engine a small fee. When PPC is working correctly, the fee is trivial, because the visit is worth more than what you pay for it. In other words, if we pay £/$3 for a click, but the click results in a £/$1000 sale, then we've made a hefty profit. And the same can be true for any product or service. The aim of the game is to get to a state where you know your numbers well enough to scale up budgets accordingly, because you can predict your ROI.

Which Businesses Are Suited For PPC?

First of all, If cost is going to be an issue; then PPC isn't going to be for you. Gone are the days where throwing $5 per day on an ad is enough; because the competition online is massive. Advertisers all over the world are willing to spend lots of money to ensure their product or service is seen by buyers, so if you have a small budget - other avenues may be more beneficial until you can sustain a reasonable ad spend of £50-£100 per day minimum.

Another reason that we advice having a reasonable budget set aside, is because through all the will in the world, sometimes for whatever reason, your first ad campaign isn't always a success! It could be the imagery, copy, price point, problem with the landing page or seasonal factors. With this in mind, we need to constantly be testing and can't afford to run out of budget partly through testing a campaign.

However, once done right, PPC is the secret sauce that powers many businesses around the world, because once you get it right, the possibilities are limitless!

tick

E-commerce Businesses: PPC can be particularly effective for e-commerce businesses. These businesses can use PPC to target customers who are searching for the products they sell. Google Shopping ads, for example, allow e-commerce businesses to display product images and prices directly in the search results, which can significantly increase click-through rates.

tick

Local Businesses: Local businesses can use PPC to target customers in their area. With location targeting, businesses can ensure their ads are only displayed to people in a specific geographic area. This can be particularly effective when combined with mobile advertising, as businesses can reach customers who are geographically nearby and may be looking for the products or services they offer, i.e a restaraunt.

tick

Software / SaaS: As software and SaaS is a very competitive space, PPC targetting can give immediate visibility, and therefore 'first mover advantage'. Especially if backed by a sizeable marketing fund, PPC can help quickly pick up a customer base to start earning recurring revenue, or increase a companies valuation based on sign ups. Many Software/ SaaS companies will run a PPC Campaign at a 'loss' because the recurring revenue far exceeds the value of the first month's sign up fee.

tick

Service Based Businesses: Lead generation via PPC methods are very effective in being able to fill a sales pipeline with a predictable number of leads, so that a business can concentrate on team performance, rather than constantly trying to find new sources of business. Many companies that require a consultation or 'sales process' to close use PPC as SEO takes a long time to start yielding results. I.E Construction companies (where a quote is involved), Lawyers (where a consultation is involved) or cosmetic businesses (where an assesment of work is needed).
